- A Conversation with Dr. Wu Lizhang, Director of Ward II at Huanya Hospital Zigong Campus (Zigong Gaoxin Cancer Hospital)
Rooted in interventional oncology day after day for ten years, paving the way to recovery for patients through a comprehensive treatment philosophy
In the specialized medical field of interventional oncology, he treats catheters and puncture needles as extensions of his hands, approaching lesions again and again under the guidance of imaging equipment. From the operating room lights to the catheterization suite, he has spent a decade focusing on one mission: helping those trapped by illness find the support they need to live on. He is Wu Lizhang, Director of Ward II at Huanya Hospital Zigong Campus (Zigong Gaoxin Cancer Hospital).
Dr. Wu Lizhang graduated from Luzhou Medical College and later completed advanced training at Sichuan Cancer Hospital. Throughout this period of study and professional growth, he gradually developed a deep understanding of and strong interest in interventional oncology. When discussing his clinical focus, Dr. Wu’s technical scope spans the full chain of comprehensive cancer treatment. In drug therapy, he has in-depth expertise in interventional chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and nutritional support, and is skilled at flexibly combining treatment plans according to each patient’s disease stage and physical condition. In non-vascular interventional procedures, he is proficient in tumor puncture biopsy, abscess puncture drainage, puncture ablation for hepatic and renal cysts, and sclerotherapy for lower-limb varicose veins, performing procedures with steady technique and efficiency. In vascular intervention, his main areas of focus are interventional treatment for digestive-system malignancies such as hepatobiliary and gastrointestinal tumors, as well as pelvic malignancies. At the same time, he remains committed to VTE prevention and treatment and to the interventional management of various tumor-related complications, seeking to reduce secondary harm from treatment while patients receive anti-tumor benefits.
In November 2024, Dr. Wu Lizhang was invited to present case studies at a grassroots academic exchange meeting organized by the Maternal and Child Interventional and Rehabilitation Professional Committee of the Sichuan Preventive Medicine Association. He brought several real cases he had personally managed to the podium, sharing the twists, turns, and reflections behind them. This plainspoken yet professional approach to exchange allowed the attending colleagues to see the pragmatism and perseverance characteristic of grassroots interventional physicians. A decade of clinical training has made him increasingly clear about the direction he should pursue and the types of problems he should solve for different patients.
