Oncology Expert Professor Liao Zhengyin Invited to Attend the Sichuan-Tibet Academic Exchange Conference on Cancer, 2026 Nyingchi Station
Recently, the 2026 Academic Conference of the Imaging Branch of the Tibet Autonomous Region Medical Association and the Sichuan-Tibet Academic Exchange Conference on Cancer (2026 Nyingchi Station) were held in Nyingchi, Tibet. Professor Liao Zhengyin, Distinguished Expert of Chengdu Uni-Asia Cancer Hospital, was invited to attend the conference and deliver a special academic presentation entitled “Key Clinical Techniques and Precautions for NanoKnife Treatment of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Tumors.” He joined experts in medical imaging, oncology, and minimally invasive intervention from Sichuan and Tibet to discuss the latest advances in precision treatment.

NanoKnife: Delivering a “Precision Electric Shock” to Tumors
At the conference, Professor Liao Zhengyin explained that “NanoKnife” is not a surgical knife in the traditional sense, but a technology known as irreversible electroporation (IRE). Under image guidance, electrode needles are placed around the tumor to deliver high-voltage, ultra-short electrical pulses. These pulses create irreversible nanoscale pores in the membranes of tumor cells, triggering tumor cell apoptosis.
Compared with conventional thermal ablation, NanoKnife offers better protection of critical tubular structures such as blood vessels, bile ducts, and pancreatic ducts. It therefore has unique advantages in treating tumors located in anatomically complex areas, such as the hepatic hilum and around the pancreas, providing a new treatment option for some patients with hepatobiliary and pancreatic tumors.
Clinical Practice: Precision, Standardization, and Safety Are Key
Drawing on extensive clinical experience and case studies, Professor Liao systematically explained the key technical aspects of NanoKnife treatment for hepatobiliary and pancreatic tumors, including preoperative assessment, puncture-path planning, electrode placement, parameter settings, intraoperative monitoring, and complication prevention.
Professor Liao emphasized that precision is at the core of NanoKnife treatment:
- Before treatment, CT, MRI, and other imaging data should be used for three-dimensional reconstruction to clearly determine the relationship between the tumor and surrounding blood vessels, bile ducts, and pancreatic ducts.
- During the procedure, multiple electrodes should be placed in parallel under image guidance to ensure that the ablation zone covers the tumor as well as an appropriate safety margin.
- Pulse parameters should be properly configured, while general anesthesia and muscle relaxation should be appropriately managed. The patient's vital signs should be closely monitored to prevent complications such as bleeding, pancreatic fistula, and bile leakage.
Professor Liao Zhengyin stressed that although NanoKnife is a minimally invasive treatment, it requires a high level of procedural standardization and close teamwork. Indications must be strictly controlled, and comprehensive perioperative management must be emphasized to achieve safe and effective treatment.
